The African Company Presents Richard III
Written by Carlyle Brown
May 7-30, 2027
Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30pm | Sundays at 2:00pm
It’s 1821 in New York, and two productions of Shakespeare’s Richard III are vying for audiences. William Henry Brown, a free Black American and leader of the African Company, is encouraged by the growing popularity of his downtown theatre troupe with both Black and white audiences. Threatened by their success, white Uptown producer, Stephen Price will stop at nothing to shut them down. Written by celebrated Minnesota playwright, Carlyle Brown, this true story straight from American theater history explores the fight for artistic expression with joy, anger, laughter, and passion.
