MORE ABOUT THE SHOW...
"The kind of play that reminds you of why you love theatre."
- Hartford News
Lotty and Rose barely know each other. On the surface, they share little beyond a membership in the same London ladies' club. But both are straining under the weight of dreary weather and dreary marriages. When Lotty reads an advertisement appealing to "those who love sunshine and wisteria," her heart soars with hope: a small castle on the Mediterranean in northern Italy is available to rent for the month of April. Soon she is sharing her dream with Rose, and a bond forms.
Braving their husbands' disapproval, the ladies plan a holiday without them. To help share expenses, they recruit a languid young socialite and a dour dowager. The four unlikely housemates rendezvous at San Salvatore Castle. There, under the rejuvenating, sun-drenched surroundings and the watchful eyes of Costanza, the housekeeper, spirits lighten, hearts melt and things long-dormant once more bloom.
Based on the 1922 novel The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim, the romantic comedy Enchanted April premiered in 2000 at the Hartford Stage Company. It traveled to Broadway in 2003 and was nominated for a Tony award for Best Play, with a cast including Elizabeth Ashley and Molly Ringwald. It has been twice brought to the screen, in a 1935 film and a 1992 Golden Globe-winning version with Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent and Joan Plowright.
